Print comics are built on pages. Vertical-scroll comics are built on one continuous column, read on a phone, at a speed the reader sets with their thumb. That single structural change alters almost every craft decision underneath it.
Losing the page turn
The page turn is a print comic's most powerful device. Everything on one spread is visible at once, and the turn hides what comes next, so a reveal can be timed precisely.
Vertical scroll has no equivalent. Nothing is hidden by a mechanism; the reader simply hasn't scrolled there yet, and they control the speed. A reveal can be scrolled past in a fraction of a second or lingered over for a minute.
What replaces it is distance. Putting a large gap before a panel forces the reader to keep scrolling with nothing to look at, and that gap becomes the pause the page turn used to provide.
Empty space as a timing device
In print, blank space is expensive — it uses page area you paid for. In vertical scroll it costs almost nothing, so it becomes the format's main pacing tool.
Short gaps read as quick beats. Long gaps read as silence, tension, or a scene change. A very long gap before a single panel is the format's version of a full-page reveal, and it works for exactly the same reason.

Getting the gaps wrong is the most common failure. Uniform spacing produces a flat read, and readers describe it as monotonous without being able to say why.
The fix is to read your own column at normal speed rather than scrolling through it looking for mistakes. Pacing problems are felt rather than seen, and nobody ever notices them while inspecting a layout at arm's length on a desktop monitor.
Panels change shape
A phone screen is wide relative to how much vertical space it shows at once, so tall panels get cropped by the viewport and lose their impact. Panels drift wider and shallower as a result.
Detail also has to survive a small screen, which means stronger silhouettes, higher contrast, and less fine texture — the same constraints described in our piece on watching in an app.
Speech placement changes too. Text has to sit where it's read in scroll order, and a balloon positioned for a print page frequently arrives before or after the image it belongs to.
What this means for adult sequences
Intimate sequences benefit from the format more than most material does, because scroll gives fine control over pacing and pacing carries intent.
Establishing beats can be spaced generously, so arrival, hesitation, and agreement each get their own moment rather than being compressed into a corner of a page. That sequencing is what makes mutual intent read, as set out in the piece on reading intent in drawn work.
The risk is the opposite: a column that scrolls straight into an explicit panel with no spacing reads as abrupt, which is a staging failure rather than a content one. Geography first, then closer, exactly as in the blocking guide.
The standards that don't change with format
Format has no bearing on the floor. Characters are fictional and unmistakably adult, with no ambiguity about age, no real-person sexual depiction, no coercion presented as romance, and no traced or stolen artwork.

Designing for a column instead of a page
The practical method is to build in the format rather than adapting to it. Lay the column out at phone width from the start, scroll it on an actual phone, and time the gaps by reading rather than by measuring.
Work converted from print pages almost always shows it: uniform spacing, tall panels that crop badly, and reveals that land in the wrong place. Work built as a column reads like it was meant to be read that way, which is the only test that matters.
